OPWDD Family Support Services: Help for Families Caring at Home

Family supportCaregiversOPWDD

Most people with developmental disabilities in New York live with their families, and those families do an enormous amount of unpaid work. OPWDD's Family Support Services (FSS) program exists to help them keep going.

Who it's for

FSS is for families who are actively caring at home for a family member with a developmental disability who is eligible for OPWDD services. It's meant to support the caregiver and keep the family together, for children and adults alike.

What FSS can include

Services vary by region and provider, but can include:

  • Respite, during the day, evening, or overnight
  • Recreation, including after-school, weekend, and summer or day camp programs
  • Family reimbursement or cash subsidy for some disability-related costs
  • Counseling and support groups
  • Behavior management help and crisis intervention
  • Financial and future planning assistance
  • Information, referral, and training for families
  • Transportation
  • Special adaptive equipment and home modifications

How it differs from waiver services

Many OPWDD services, such as Self-Direction and day programs, are paid for through Medicaid and the HCBS Waiver. FSS is a separate, state-funded program. That makes it useful for families who are still waiting on Medicaid or waiver enrollment, or who need help with something the waiver doesn't cover.

How to ask

  • Ask your Care Manager which FSS providers serve your county and what they offer.
  • Contact OPWDD's Front Door or regional office, or call OPWDD's information line at 1-866-946-9733.
  • Ask each provider about waitlists and how often funds open up. Some services are limited.
